GivEnergy has gone into administration — what it means for your battery or inverter?

If you're reading this, you've probably heard the news: GivEnergy Ltd, one of the UK's best-known home battery and inverter brands, has entered administration. It's understandable to feel worried especially if you have one of their systems installed at your home.

We've put together this guide to answer the questions we're already hearing from customers, and to be as clear and honest as possible about what happens next.

Does my GivEnergy battery or inverter still work?

Yes. Your physical equipment, the inverter, battery, and any associated hardware should continue to work normally. It doesn't rely on GivEnergy as a company to function. Your battery will still charge overnight on your cheap tariff, and your inverter will still harvest and manage your solar generation exactly as before.

What about the GivEnergy app and monitoring portal?

This is less certain. GivEnergy's cloud-based monitoring services (the app and the online portal at givenergy.cloud) are dependent on the company maintaining their servers. During administration, these services may be disrupted or discontinued. It's worth noting that your system will continue to operate even if cloud monitoring goes offline - you just won't be able to see live data remotely. Only GivEnergy Ltd the business that supplies the systems has gone into administration. It is part of a group of companies and others such as GivEnergy software are still operating. You may have had an email directly from GivEnergy Software asking about paying for software access to your system. We believe this is an attempt to keep the software business alive. Once we have a clearer picture of the Administration process we will keep you informed.

If you're technically inclined, local access via GivTCP / Modbus is possible on many GivEnergy systems, and some users have also had success integrating with platforms like Home Assistant as an alternative monitoring route.

I have heard that Tewdric Energy is developing its own software, can we use this instead?

Although Tewdric is developing its own software platform we are still several months at least away from any release. Our platform is intended to offer advanced optimisation services and is not designed to work with just one manufacturer. However if we can we will look at building in support for GivEnergy equipment in the future. Our software will also include EV charging functionality as well as wider energy trading services. But again this is not a quick fix for the current situation.

Is my warranty still valid?

This is the question most people are asking, and we want to be straight with you: it's complicated.

When a manufacturer enters administration, their ability to honour warranty obligations depends on what happens during the process and whether the business is sold as a going concern, wound down, or restructured.

What we can tell you is that Tewdric Energy will do everything in our power to support the systems we have installed. Where we can resolve an issue through our own expertise and parts sourcing, we will. We are actively working to understand the full warranty picture and will update our customers as we know more.

Can I still get my system repaired or serviced?

Again this is complicated. If you are a Tewdric client then please contact Tewdric Energy directly. We are going to continue supporting GivEnergy hardware where we can although timescales may be longer than usual. Don't attempt to contact GivEnergy directly for support at this stage, as their customer service operation is likely to be significantly disrupted.

Should I be replacing my system?

Not necessarily and certainly not in a panic. Your hardware is physically sound and should continue to give you years of reliable service. The main risk areas are warranty cover and cloud monitoring, both of which we're working to address. We'll give you honest advice if and when a replacement or upgrade makes sense for your situation.
