Energy Bills Are Changing from today. Here’s What You Need to Know (and Why It Matters!)
Big news from the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves: the Green Levy is being scrapped – a move that headlines say could save households around £150 a year. Sounds great, right? But before you celebrate too hard, there’s a twist you need to know about.
What Was the Green Levy Anyway?
Since 2001, the Green Levy has been a charge on energy bills. It started as a tax on businesses, then shifted to energy operators, and by the early 2010s, it landed on domestic bills. The money funded important schemes like:
Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) – helping improve home energy efficiency.
Warm Home Discount – supporting vulnerable households.
Feed-in Tariffs – encouraging solar panel adoption.
So, Will My Bills Drop?
Yes… but only for a moment. While the Green Levy is going away, a new charge is coming in November 2025. It’s called the Nuclear Regulated Asset Base (RAB) levy, and it’s designed to fund the UK’s nuclear expansion, including the massive £38+ billion Sizewell C project.
This new levy will be passed on by electricity suppliers directly to customers.
Show up as a separate line item on your bill (possibly starting this month) although expected to begin at £1 per month
Expected to increase your daily standing charge in the near future as well.
What Can You Do?
Because while the headlines promise savings, many households will feel like it’s “given with one hand and taken with the other.” The nuclear levy could offset much of the Green Levy savings, and it’s arriving fast with little time for consumers to prepare.
Keep an eye on your bills for new line items and consider energy-saving measures now to soften the impact.
Bottom line: Energy bills are changing, and understanding why is the first step to staying in control. If you found this helpful, share it – because most people have no idea this is coming!
