Redwood House Case Study

What was wanted & what was offered to satisfy?

Redwood House is a 1980s property renovated by its current owners with a desire to reduce its running costs and fully utilise smart technology. The owners needed to plan how to come off their  cheap fixed energy deal rate into a considerably more expensive energy market with volatile prices. The client was already an Octopus customer with an on-grid renewable energy supply but wished to become even more green, resilient and self-sufficient moving forward.

The client was seeking an intelligent solar system which would generate sufficient energy to cover the existing house demand and also provide enough energy to use for the charging of a planned purchase of an EV vehicle.

The customer expected solar panels to be deployed to the front roof of the property, however, key software used to design the Solar installation identified a higher power yield was possible from deploying panels to the rear of the property.

On average the property used 12 to 14kw of electricity a day. The Tewdric Energy solution included the deployment of 14 roof mounted 405watt Canadian Solar Panels (generating a peak hourly yield of 5.67KW) supported with Tigo Optimisers to maximise generation and report on any faults. This was supported by a smart enabled 5.6KW GivEnergy Invertor system & a 9.5KW Battery storage Solution alongside a smart & sleek 7KW EO EV Charger. The use of the Battery Solution enabled the client to store some of the power created in the daytime by the solar panels and release the power at night to service the overnight power use of the home.

Bird netting was used around the panels to prevent Wild bird nesting.

Following regulations the National Grid was contacted by Tewdric Energy who confirmed that they would take any excess power generation from the property to normal limits (3.68KW per hour). It also confirmed its acceptance for the property to have an EV charger installed (7KW model).

The customer experience

After a physical and desktop survey the client received a proposal that confirmed all elements of the installation – predicted yield generation reports, ROI forecast, technical product details, pricing, warranty details etc.

Scaffolding was up and down on the property within a week with clear communication on when deployment and removal would take place.

The installation of the systems took 2.5 days to complete and the commissioning process to ensure its conformity with governing standards and to ensure the systems was internet enabled & fully smart took 0.5 days.

Training was given to the client on the use of the supporting Apps.

Tewdric Energy continue to remote monitor the system performance.

Other key things

The client has found that in the first six months of his installation he has consistently found that only 5% of his monthly electricity use is now coming from the national grid.

The local area national grid substation for the property has been experiencing a number of failures leading to power cuts without notice. On each occasion the client has been able to make use of the emergency use double socket that also comes with his system to power the freezer, microwave, charge phones and laptops etc at a time when other properties had no power option at all.
