How do I calculate my energy usage?

Calculating your energy usage is important if you are trying to understand your consumption in order to manage costs or determine the return on investment for solar panels. The team at Tewdric Energy help customers to do this but here are some ways determine your energy usage if you want to do it on your own:

Analyse your Energy Bills

Most suppliers offer you an online portal so you can check the energy used over time. Try to compare like for like over time e.g. January with January, July with July. You’ll find that consumption is usually higher in the winter months due to having the lights and heating on more. Check whether these are accurate meter readings or an estimate as these can vary from what you are actually using. Don’t forget that if you are not on a fixed price contract, the kilowatt-hours (kWh) used may vary so study the Usage Breakdown section of your bill to help you calculate the details.

Take Meter Readings

Taking regular meter readings at regular intervals (say every week or month) will help you to calculate your usage over the week or month. To get a really accurate idea of your consumption, you will want to do it over 12 months as summer usage tends to be far less than during the winter months

Smart Meter

If you already have a smart meter then this gives you real-time information. You may have an app or device that even gives you current usage in £’s.
