Everything you need to know about optimisers

What is an optimiser?

An optimiser is a small, smart device that connects to each individual panel across your string of panels. Optimisers can be added to traditional solar panels and act like small power stations to optimise each panels efficiency.

Optimisers have many benefits such as:

-          Increases your panel efficiency

-          Low maintenance

-          Overcome the impact of shading or debris

-          Allows us to better the monitoring of your system

-          Built-in safety mechanisms

How do they improve efficiency?

An optimiser can work in many ways to improve your panels efficiency, one of them being to work under obstruction pressure. If one panel had a few leaves on normally this would degrade the entire string of panels and cause your system produce less energy. With an optimiser, the entire string of panels maintains power output even if one panel is shaded or obstructed meaning the whole system can continue to work efficiently.

Are optimisers worth the investment?

Simply: Yes.

Optimisers do come at a cost but we believe they are worth the extra investment when building your solar pv system. We would not be comfortable installing your panel system without an optimiser for safety reasons. In the case of a fire or damage to the electrical cabling your optimisers will automatically shut down the output from each individual panel, minimising the risk of electrical shock to you or emergency response teams.

Currently, optimisers on solar panels are not a legal requirement in this country, which we believe is wrong. They are a legal requirement in the US and other European Countries. Something as simple as installing an optimiser could save lives. We believe and hope that the installation of these small, smart devices will become mandatory in the UK. We strongly advise owners of existing panel systems to retrospectively install these devices but anyone considering a new system should not consider anything else.
